As much as we love a good pink tile moment… this bathroom was ready for a new chapter.

When we first stepped into this space, it had character – but it also came with challenges. The layout felt disjointed, the finishes were outdated, and the functionality just wasn’t there for everyday use.

The goal wasn’t just to update how it looked.
It was to create a space that felt intentional, cohesive, and built to function well for years to come.

Building a Better Foundation (Literally)

Before the finishes even began, a lot of behind-the-scenes work went into making this space solid and reliable.

We:

  • Installed all new subflooring and reframed the joists to create a perfectly level, stable foundation
  • Replaced outdated knob-and-tube wiring with two new dedicated electrical circuits
  • Upgraded plumbing with new ¾” water supply lines from the second floor to the basement to improve pressure
  • Added proper ventilation, including two fans vented through the brick exterior

These are the kinds of details you don’t always see – but they make a big difference in how a space performs long-term.

Reworking the Space with Intention

While we kept the general footprint, we made thoughtful updates to improve how the bathroom functions day-to-day.

That included:

  • Adding new outlets and can lighting for better usability and brightness
  • Building a custom towel storage cubby above the base cabinets
  • Creating a knee wall to cleanly frame the cast iron alcove tub
  • Installing a custom glass shower door and panel to open up the space

We also chose to reuse the existing pedestal sink to preserve a bit of the home’s original character, pairing it with a new medicine cabinet to freshen up that area.

A Tile Transformation That Carries Throughout

Tile played a huge role in bringing this space together.

We installed:

  • A fully tiled wainscot with a base, beadboard-inspired tile, and a chair rail detail
  • Glass subway tile that ties in beautifully with the shower wall color
  • Clean, timeless finishes that feel cohesive from wall to wall

But the real standout…

The Floor (and Why It Matters)

If you’ve been following along, you might remember – we talked about this floor before.

Because it did not come like this.

The floor features a marble hexagon tile paired with a custom black hexagon accent pattern – and that pattern carries seamlessly into the shower floor.

It’s installed over Ditra Heat, adding both comfort and performance to the space.

What looks like a simple design at first glance is actually the result of careful planning, layout, and precision installation. Every piece plays a role in the final look.

This is one of those details that quietly elevates the entire room.

Blending Old and New

One of our favorite parts of this project is how it balances fresh updates with original character.

We:

  • Reused the pedestal sink
  • Installed new white marmiline thresholds to mimic the original marble
  • Paired classic elements with modern performance upgrades

The result is a space that feels updated – but still connected to the home it belongs to.

The Finished Space

Now, the bathroom feels:

  • Clean without being sterile
  • Detailed without being overwhelming
  • And functional in a way it simply wasn’t before

This is what happens when planning, craftsmanship, and intentional design all come together.
