How Thoughtful Details Transformed This A-Frame Home in Northwest Ohio
When most people think about remodeling, they imagine knocking down walls, adding square footage, or completely changing the layout of their home.
But sometimes the best transformations happen when you work with what you already have.
This recent interior remodel in Waterville, Ohio is a perfect example.
The homeowners already had an incredible A-frame home. With soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed wood, and a loft overlooking the main living space, the architecture had always been beautiful. The problem wasn’t the house itself – it was that over the years, some of the finishes had become dated and distracted from what made the home so special.
Instead of trying to make it something completely different, the goal was simple:
Bring out the best in the home that was already there.
Great Remodeling Starts with Great Bones
One phrase you’ll hear often in real estate is that a home has “good bones.”
This house certainly did.

The dramatic ceiling lines and open staircase create the kind of character that simply can’t be replicated in many newer homes. But older homes often reach a point where finishes no longer match the quality of the architecture around them.
That’s exactly where thoughtful remodeling can make the biggest impact.
Rather than chasing trends, this project focused on timeless materials, quality craftsmanship, and details that would complement the home’s existing character for years to come.
Three Staircases. One Cohesive Design.
Most homes have a single staircase that serves as a focal point.
This A-frame had three separate staircases and railing systems connecting different levels of the home. Rather than updating just one area, the goal was to create a consistent design that flowed throughout the entire house.

Our team removed the existing railings, completed stair framing improvements where needed, installed new stair treads, and crafted a custom railing system featuring stained red oak and black steel spindles.
Because these staircases are visible from multiple vantage points throughout the home, every detail mattered. The result isn’t just a new staircase – it’s an architectural feature that guides your eye through the entire space and complements the home’s dramatic A-frame design.

Small Details That Create a Big Difference
While the custom railings may be the most noticeable feature, they weren’t the only part of the transformation.
The project also included:
- Board and batten wall installation
- Interior painting and finish work
- Cabinet door removal, refinishing, and reinstallation
- Updated electrical preparation for new wall sconces
- Fresh trim and architectural details throughout the space.

Individually, these improvements might seem modest.
Together, they completely changed how the home feels.
That’s often the difference between simply updating a house and intentionally remodeling one.
Why We Love Projects Like This
One of our favorite things about remodeling is helping homeowners fall back in love with the home they already own.
Many people assume they need a major addition or a complete renovation when what they really need is a thoughtful plan that highlights their home’s strengths.
The best projects don’t erase a home’s character.
They build on it.
This A-frame still feels like the same home its owners have loved for years. It simply feels warmer, more intentional, and more reflective of who they are today.
