Many homes in Northwest Ohio still have bathrooms that were built in the 1950s and 1960s. While they often have solid bones, the layouts, finishes, and materials can feel dated and sometimes hide issues like moisture damage.

That’s exactly what we discovered when Nicole asked Kleeberger Contracting Services to remodel her hallway/kids bathroom.

Nicole came to us with a clear vision for the space – she had even used AI to generate images that captured the finishes and overall feel she wanted. Her goal was to create a bathroom that felt clean, bright, and modern, while still incorporating warm natural wood elements for character. Here was her inspiration:

Our job was helping turn that inspiration into a functional and beautifully crafted space.

Starting with a Full Bathroom Gut

This project began as a complete bathroom renovation.

The existing hallway bathroom still had many of its original 1960s features, including outdated tile, a small cast iron tub, and an overhead soffit that made the room feel more cramped than it actually was.

During demolition we removed:

  • Original 1960s tile and finishes
  • The overhead soffit
  • The small cast iron tub
  • The exterior window
  • Damaged subfloor caused by previous water intrusion

Because of the water damage we discovered, the bathroom required new subfloor installation before rebuilding could begin.

Once the structure was addressed, we installed new drywall on the walls and ceiling with fresh texture, giving us a clean slate for the new design.

Designing a Bright and Inviting Hallway Bathroom

The goal of this remodel was to balance bright, clean finishes with warm natural textures.

To achieve that look, we carefully selected materials that would complement one another while also being durable enough for everyday use.

Key features of the finished bathroom include:

  • Porcelain tile flooring for durability and easy maintenance
  • A deep soaking tub replacing the old cast iron tub
  • A vent fan and light combination with additional LED lighting to brighten the space
  • A shiplap accent wall adding texture and character
  • A custom maple vanity topped with a tapered quartz countertop
  • Matte black plumbing fixtures for modern contrast
  • A custom maple mirror and floating shelves to bring warmth into the design
  • White ceramic subway tile installed in a random offset pattern
  • Wood-look porcelain tile on the sidewalls for a rustic, natural feel without the maintenance of real wood

The combination of materials creates a bathroom that feels both timeless and unique.

Bringing a Homeowner’s Vision to Life

One of the things we enjoy most about remodeling projects is collaborating with homeowners who have a strong vision for their space.

Nicole’s use of AI to visualize her preferred finishes gave us a great starting point, and from there we worked together to select materials and details that would make the design come to life.

The finished hallway bathroom now feels open, bright, and welcoming, while the natural maple accents add warmth that makes the space feel truly custom.
